Nervous tissue
Nervous tissue
Features:
- consists of nerve cells (neurons) and glial cells (neuroglia)
- conducts nerve impulses
Neurons
- they are responsible for the main function of the nerve tissue - conduction of nerve impluses
- they perceive stimuli from the external and internal environment
- they transfer information to various organs, which allows them to control and coordinate their work
structure of a neuron
- cell body containing a cell nucleus
- dendrites - numerous, short, branching appendages
- axon - a single, long and branched appendage, surrounded by a myelin sheath, which shortens the conduction time of nerve impulses
The nerve impulse conducted by a nerve cell usually runs from the dendrites to the axon
Neuroglia
Support the growth and functioning of neurons:
- provide neurons with nutrients
- they form myelin sheaths around the axons
